Misdemeanors
Our Misdemeanor Section handles all misdemeanor crimes. Approximately 2,500 of
these cases come through the District Attorney's Office a year. Along with
answering phone calls from the general public regarding court dates and other
various issues concerning a defendant's charges, the secretaries each have
assigned divisions and duties. Those duties include processing all misdemeanor
criminal files, setting them for Grand Jury and checking all arrest and bond
information relating to the file/defendant, before routing it to be set for
either misdemeanor or felony court.
When misdemeanor files assigned to the 14th Judicial District Court, an
assistant district attorney takes it to court, at which time the Misdemeanor
Section processes all files in accordance with the Court's action. In addition,
this section is responsible for processing all charges relating to Wildlife and
Fisheries and Animal Control violations. It is the agency responsible for
collecting the fines for violations to these codes if the individual chooses to
pay the fine out of court.
The misdemeanors that occur within the Lake Charles City limits are set up for
City Court. Responsibilities for these misdemeanors include receiving and
processing all files screened by the assistant district attorney assigned to
City Court and processing the files in accordance with the Court's action.
