Meet the D.A.
District Attorney John F. DeRosier
John DeRosier was born in Eunice, La., the fifth of six children. He
graduated from St. Edmund’s High School, attended the University of
Southwestern Louisiana with a major in History and Political Science, and
entered law school after three years of college. While he was in law school,
Mr. DeRosier enlisted in the Marine Corps as a machine gunner and spent 11
months in Vietnam. He was awarded the Naval Achievement Medal with Combat
“V.” Upon his return to civilian life, he re-entered and completed law
school. Mr. DeRosier practiced law in Lake Charles, focusing on civil
litigation, personal injury and criminal law, and served as Lake Charles
City Attorney for seven years.
He was elected Calcasieu Parish District Attorney and took the oath of
office on December 20, 2005.
As District Attorney, Mr. DeRosier :
• established the Case Review Team to improve communications with law
enforcement
• created the Calcasieu Full Force program to target DWI offenders.
• worked with legislators to pass several pieces of legislation regarding
more stringent requirements for sex offenders and the addition of the
mentally ill to the protected persons statute to prevent their victimization
by the system.
• proactively implemented an aggressive campaign to capture and prosecute
online sexual predators.
• furnished an Assistant District Attorney for the Combined Anti-Drug Task
Force to target serious and habitual drug traffickers.
• re-established the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner program and an adult drug
court program.
• opened a part-time District Attorney substation in the Martin Luther King
Recreation Center on North Simmons Street.
• instituted the “Fatal Vision” program that travels to schools to
dramatically teach the dangers of impaired driving.
• was instrumental in passing “doctor shopping” legislation during the 2007
Louisiana legislative session.
Mr.DeRosier is married to the former Leigh Ann Cross and is the father of
three children.
